چکیده

A variant ofSCMV-D is the most common strain of sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) occurring in sugarcane in the coastal hinterland and high altitude areas of Natal. In field trials conducted at Mount Edgecombe and Eston this strain decreased the yield of recoverable sugar from variety NCo 376 by 30 to 42 % and that from variety Nl2 by 15 to 30% when all the stalks were infected. Losses in yield were mainly due to decreases in stalk mass and stalk population. There was no consistent effect of mosaic on cane quality. The relationship between decrease in yield and incidence of mosaic was approximately linear.

The Susceptibility of Varieties to Mosaic and the Effect of Planting Date on Mosaic Incidence in South Africa

The majority of South African sugarcane varieties are resistant to mosaic but two widely grown varieties, NCo 376 and.NCo 293, are highdy susceptible. Application of Temik (aldicarb) to the soil at planting was not beneficial in controlling mosaic. Mosaic transmission was restricted to January to May but very rapid spread only occurred in mid January to March, i.e. late summer and early autumn....

Sugarcane Mosaic Virus-Based Gene Silencing in Nicotiana benthamiana

Background:Potyvirus-based virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) is used for knocking down the expression of a target gene in numerous plant species. Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) is a monopartite, positive single strand RNA virus. Objectives:pBINTRA6 vector was modified by inserting a gene segment of SCMV in place of Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) genome part 1 (TRV1 or RNA1)...

Sugarcane Transcript Profiling Assessed by cDNA-AFLP Analysis during the Interaction with Sugarcane Mosaic Virus

Sugarcane mosaic caused by Sugarcane Mosaic Virus (SCMV) is one of the most important virus diseases of sugarcane. In the present study, changes in the transcription profile obtained by cDNA-AFLP analysis were investigated in two sugarcane varieties contrasting to SCMV resistance, when challenged with a severe virus strain. Healthy plants derived from meristem tip tissue culture were mechanical...

Evaluation of the Effect of Intercropping Sugarcane - Legume on the Quantitative, Qualitative and Physiological Characteristics of Sugarcane

In order to investigate the effect of different treatments of  intercropping sugarcane with two types of legumes on some quantitative and qualitative propertys of sugarcane, an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 14 treatments and four replications in two locations in Ahvaz, Iran in 2016-2017. The treatments included: Pure Sugarcane, Pure Soybean, Pure Cowpea, Pu...
